About Mars Rehab
empowering children & people with disabilities
Founded in 2003, Mars Rehab is a leading community-based organization based in Kanpur, dedicated to empowering people with disabilities living in urban slums. A project of Bhawna Society for the Disabled, Mars Rehab works closely with children and young adults with disabilities, offering support to their families and striving to make their communities more inclusive and accessible.
In addition to grassroots community work, we operate India’s National Disability Helpline and actively contribute to disability rights policy, including influential frameworks such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
Our Mission: To provide comprehensive support in health, education, and rights for individuals with disabilities, enabling them to lead empowered and dignified lives.

Why Persons with Disabilities?

Inclusive education
We are committed to the principles of Education for All (EFA)—a fundamental policy that ensures no child is denied access to quality education. At Mars Rehab, we facilitate the mainstreaming of children with disabilities from diverse socio-economic backgrounds into regular schools. Our work is rooted in the belief that all children, regardless of their impairments or abilities, should have the opportunity to learn and play together in inclusive environments.

Inclusive health
We strive to build sustainable and inclusive health systems and services that serve everyone, including people with disabilities. Our efforts focus on minimizing the conditions that lead to disability and reducing the prevalence of diseases that cause impairments. At Mars Rehab, we emphasize that healthcare must be inclusive, accessible, and equitable for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.

Inclusive livelihood
We are dedicated to removing barriers that prevent people with disabilities from fully participating in livelihood opportunities. At Mars Rehab, we design and implement locally relevant on-farm, off-farm, and non-farm livelihood models that are inclusive by design. These innovative approaches bring together individuals with and without disabilities to work side by side as one unified and empowered team.

Humanitarian response
At Mars Rehab, we work to reduce the impact of disasters on vulnerable communities by actively mitigating risks and building resilience. Our approach ensures that persons with disabilities are equally reached and meaningfully involved in all stages of disaster response and preparedness. We address their specific needs while promoting full inclusion in mainstream humanitarian services. Mars Rehab has responded to major humanitarian crises across India, ensuring no one is left behind.

We are deeply embedded in the communities we serve, with many of our programs led by people with disabilities who have benefited from our capacity-building education.
